G’day, mates! Matilda and Clancy here, the cheekiest donkeys around, bringing you some exciting news from our beloved Tamborine. You know, there are some things in life that just make a place feel special, and one of those things has finally made a comeback. We’re talking about none other than the iconic windmill at the Bearded Dragon Hotel!
Now, this old girl may have seen her fair share of wear and tear over the years. After all, she’s a vintage beauty from the 1920s—imagine that! But thanks to the loving care and expertise of the one and only windmill expert, Gary Haines, and the Bearded Dragon Hotel team, she’s been given a brand-new lease on life. It’s been a labor of love, let us tell you!
The Bearded Dragon Hotel celebrated its 21st birthday in 2019, and as part of the festivities, they decided it was high time to give the windmill the attention it deserved. Alongside restoring the windmill, they also brought back the majestic Cobb n Co Coach to its original glory. Talk about a blast from the past!
The restoration project wasn’t an easy feat, though. You see, finding vintage parts for a windmill is no walk in the park. It’s not like you can pop down to the local hardware store or order a few bits online from China. No, sir! It took time, patience, and a whole lot of resourcefulness to source and refurbish all the authentic components. But hey, good things come to those who wait, right?
The windmill itself holds a special place in the heart of Tamborine. It was originally relocated from Central Queensland and stands tall as a symbol of the outback. At 24 feet tall, it’s one of only three known windmills of its kind in all of Australia. That’s right, folks, it’s a true Aussie icon!
George Mills, one of the proud owners and builders of the Bearded Dragon Hotel, expressed his admiration for the windmill, stating, “No one wants to have the area cluttered with flashing signs of the city. Tamborine is special.” And we couldn’t agree more! It’s these little touches that make our town ‘Tamborine’ unique. The 1920s IBC ( International Boring Co Ltd, Brisbane) now proudly stands a beacon in the Scenic Rim .
The Bearded Dragon Hotel, Tamborine’s favorite pub in the paddock, is open daily and offers a casual all-day dining menu that’ll have your taste buds doing a happy dance. From the chef’s blackboard specials to delectable desserts, they’ve got you covered. And if you’re in need of a place to rest your hooves, they even have overnight accommodation available. Fancy a coldie? Well, the bar is always stocked, and their bottleshop is conveniently located for all your beverage needs.
But let’s not forget the main attraction—the windmill! This restored gem stands as a testament to the region’s rural charm and is a must-see for visitors and locals alike. It’s a piece of history that reminds us of the beauty of the Australian outback.
So, dear friends, if you find yourself in Tamborine or the scenic rim, don’t forget to swing by the Bearded Dragon Hotel and pay a visit to the newly refurbished windmill. It’s a sight to behold, and we guarantee it’ll make your heart flutter with Aussie pride!
